A steep grassy mound built as a stronghold before the coming of the romans in the 1st Centuaray AD. 100 ft high, and provides sweeping views of Angleseys western coast. The White lighthouse on LLanddwyn Island, 5 miles away is a prominant land mark. Below is the small holiday village which takes its name from the mound. The sandy beach which sweeps north for 3 miles towards fort Belan is backeed by a steep bank of shingle which protects the low lying farmland

AA Book of the Seaside-1972. I have to say it has changed a little bit, but not a lot!

Right so that is the backdrop for where we spent a couple of hours today. And where whilst playing with the waves, and building sandcastles we found the following beach items..

If you can correctly lable anyof them, i would appreciate the assistance!

Sand Crab and his / her underneath.

Possibly the mates shell!

Asha like these little white stones, and often uses some to decorate her castles.

The photographs dont show you the orange glisten of these two stones.

Now I was always taught that rocks were round in school, and the errosion was round. Can anyone explain this water errosion to me!

We love the lines in these three stones.

And finally this little rock, we were interested in the different colours speckles in it.

Tuff is technically a sedimentary rock formed by the accumulation of volcanic ash plus pumice or scoria. link

So onto the shells.

Bi-valve, razer shell.

Mussel .. yummy!

And now we have this.. Can anyone name the next two items?

And something which i dont recall learning about in my biology lessons.. ever!

Is it a metal crab?

Back to some of the more common shells we can enjoy for a minute longer…

I hope you have enjoyed a sample of todays find’s and hopefully by tomorrow we can have a list to go with them of what they all were!

After some reluctance because of the price, we decided to try the Cavern. On the first day (Wednesday), we were refused a discount, but when we returned on Friday, we were more than welcomed, and the orginal member of staff was no where in sight. I am so glad we returned. It was more than worth the cost.

Kents Cavern

First of all we went and discovered the kids zone. Asha had great fun, digging for precious stones, and finding the remains of Ammonite, Coral and Bivalves.

After all her hard work, she found all of these!

She then went on to have a go at brass rubbing.

a lovely picture of an Ammonite followed (need to take a photograph of her picture still) we also did some hand drawings, and painted the mask of a tribal person.

Prehistoric Cavern, dated back to 30, 000 years ago.

The cave preserves an extraordinarily rich record of Pleistocene mammals, and has yielded some of the earliest human artefacts known from britain. Recent research has shown that the cavern possesses the most complete record of pleistocene glacial and interglacial climatic cycles of any site in northwestern Europe.

The South Devon Karst, ( a landscape that develops on rocks that are more soluble than usual, where the dominant process is dissolution of the bedrock. the most common features of karsts are : closed depressions of variable sizes, and underground caves, which take all the drainage, leaving little drainage on the suface. [The most common rock for Karst is carbonate] Karst, is 20% of the earths surface. ) is one of the few limestone areas in britain, that was not over run by the Pleistocene ice sheets. The cave has accumulated both sediments and calcite speleothems for more than half a million years. It is developed in the upper half of lincombe hill. Both the hill and the cave are now small remnants of a larger system.

Stalactites, Stalagmites and Colums

This post will be added to over comming weeks.

For some time, I have been looking for something which would help me to understand the moons cycles.

I then came across a link on a friends web site, for a diary, which claimed to do such a thing.

Inspired, last week, I asked Steve to get me one. £10 felt an awful lot for a diary, so i was naturally rather worried about it. This morning my diary arrived. Its wonderful. I cannot explain to you the satisfaction of having the different calendars at ones fingertips. Knowing what celebrations are coming up for all my friends, and myself.. and the lunar cycle explained so well.

http://www.moonwise.co.uk/diary.php

Its a limited edition, but well worth still trying to get as well, i only bought mine last week!

I wish we had enough for the calendar as well, but we dont need it this year, but for any of my OU friends who are studing astronomy I can only recommend you take a look at it.

We took Asha to see a friend in a Pantomime today in Ellesmere port, at the civic hall.

Although during parts of it Asha was very upset, she did say on the way home she loved it, wants to see it again, and thought G was very very funny in it!
