The White lighthouse on LLanddwyn Island, 5 miles away is a prominant land mark. Below is the small holiday village which takes its name from the mound. The sandy beach which sweeps north for 3 miles towards fort Belan is backeed by a steep bank of shingle which protects the low lying farmland

AA Book of the Seaside-1972. I have to say it has changed a little bit, but not a lot!

Right so that is the backdrop for where we spent a couple of hours today. And where whilst playing with the waves, and building sandcastles we found the following beach items..

If you can correctly lable anyof them, i would appreciate the assistance!

Sand Crab and his / her underneath.

Possibly the mates shell!

Asha like these little white stones, and often uses some to decorate her castles.

The photographs dont show you the orange glisten of these two stones.

Now I was always taught that rocks were round in school, and the errosion was round. Can anyone explain this water errosion to me!

We love the lines in these three stones.

And finally this little rock, we were interested in the different colours speckles in it.

Tuff is technically a sedimentary rock formed by the accumulation of volcanic ash plus pumice or scoria. link

So onto the shells.

Bi-valve, razer shell.

Mussel .. yummy!

And now we have this.. Can anyone name the next two items?

Back to some of the more common shells we can enjoy for a minute longer…

Your chance to support the New Statesman’s No Place for Children campaign: join Philip Pullman, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby and others in signing our petition calling for an end to the detention of children for immigration reasons

Dear Home Secretary,

We welcome the UK’s recent commitment to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in full. In the spirit of that convention, we call on the UK government to end the practice of detaining children and families for the purposes of immigration control.

The government’s stated policy has been to detain children “only when absolutely necessary and for the shortest possible time”. In reality, however, children are often held for long periods in centres with inadequate healthcare and education. Many have been deeply traumatised by their experiences. This situation is unacceptable in a country which claims to adhere to high standards of human rights.

Our clear message is that the UK’s policy of incarcerating innocent minors must stop. Immigration detention centres are no place for children.

Submitted by Alice O’Keeffe of New Statesman
Deadline to sign up by: 16 November 2008

Roman Rock lighthouse is the only lighthouse in South Africa to stand on a rock. On account of high tides and gale-force winds, work could only be carried out 7 days a month and consequently it took 4 years to build – from 1857 to 1861.
